Garden soil delivery: purpose, quantity and spreading

Soil for finishing a garden may differ from material for other ground alterations. Define its purpose and the required result first, then the material supply and transport.

Three things to know

  • Choose material for its location and intended use.
  • For quantities, give the area dimensions and basis for layer thickness.
  • Delivery, transfer and spreading are separate activities.

Delivery to the gate or a finished area?

Explain where the soil is needed and what follows on that area. Specify material requirements for its particular use and any available design. Distinguish delivery, unloading, movement behind the house and spreading. A transport quote to the gate may not include a finished garden; order all subsequent activities explicitly.

Delivery does not replace a landscaping design

For raising or adjusting ground levels, provide target levels, area boundaries and relationships to the house, paths and surroundings. A delivered volume does not determine the right solution. If the material relates to a structure or other technical work, it must meet that work's documents.

On a slope or near a building, first clarify the proposal's suitability with the responsible specialist. This guide helps prepare a material order; it does not design fill, drainage changes or structural backfill.

The quantity estimate needs a clear basis

For a regular area, the area and proposed thickness from your design help. On uneven ground, explain how the estimate was made and where levels vary. State the unit: cubic metres and tonnes are not interchangeable.

Converting volume to weight depends on the actual material and its condition. Delivery numbers also depend on the vehicle and access. Confirm the ordered quantity, how it will be documented and whether staged deliveries may be needed.

Unloading at the gate and moving soil into the garden are separate activities

Mark where the truck can stand and where material should be unloaded. Photograph access, turns, surfaces and overhead obstacles. Identify known tanks, chambers or other objects along the route; the actual unloading conditions need assessment in advance.

If soil must continue behind the house, include that transfer in the enquiry. Unloading, distribution around the property, spreading and garden finishing are not automatically one package. SORTI has a dumper and loader for handling; the actual method depends on the site and scope.

An aid to preparing a quote. It establishes neither soil suitability for a particular structure nor a universal garden build-up.
Part of the briefWhat to confirm
Purpose and materialRequired properties and availability of the actual supply
QuantityThe unit, estimation basis and delivery documentation
Access and unloadingA suitable location and vehicle conditions
Further movementWho gets the soil to its final area
FinishingWhether you are ordering transport only or further earthworks

Example: finished paving and a garden behind the house

An owner needs soil added to a garden area, but the agreed truck position is only at the front gate. If they order delivery alone, the material may remain somewhere from which someone still needs to move it.

A clearer brief includes the material's purpose, photographs of the entire route and subsequent handling scope. Protection of finished surfaces and suitability of the method are clarified too. This example is not an actual reference or a promise that a particular machine will fit.

What to send and what to look for in the quote

Send the municipality, purpose, specification, quantity with its unit, and photographs of access and the intended use area. Explain whether spreading or other earthworks follow and who arranges them. Identify uncertain quantities and unverified specifications as outstanding.

Distinguish material, transport, any waiting and further transfer or work in the quote. Check what is confirmed and the assumptions behind it. Clarifying the entire scope helps more than comparing the price of a single trip.

Frequently asked questions

Does soil delivery automatically mean topsoil?

No. Specify the required type and properties and confirm availability for the actual order. The service name alone does not guarantee the supply's properties.

Does transport include spreading around the garden?

Only if explicitly agreed. Identify the unloading point, final use and whether further handling or preparation is needed.

Can I order an exact tonnage from the garden area?

Area and a designed layer provide a basis for estimating volume. Weight and transport need clarification for the actual material.

Can I use the soil for any backfill beside a building?

Suitability for technical backfill must follow the particular structure's requirements. A garden soil delivery does not replace that assessment.

Your next step

Clarify the material and its route into the garden

Send the purpose, specification and quantity with its unit. Add the unloading point, recipient and scope of further movement or spreading.
