Three things to know
- Plan excavation and material transfer together.
- Truck access may differ from the small machine route.
- Allow space for loading, turning and temporary storage.
Contents of this guide
Draw the complete soil route
Draw the soil route from the excavation to loading or its agreed position on site. SORTI has a 2.5 t JCB mini excavator and a 2.5 t JCB dumper for site movements. These categories do not promise a particular payload or access clearance. The route, surface, working space and loading arrangements determine a suitable combination.
When to assess a dumper
If a truck cannot stand beside the excavator, soil may need transport across the plot. A dumper is one option. Suitability depends on clearance, surface, slope, working room and scope; it is not an automatic answer for every garden.
SORTI lists 2.5 t and 5 t JCB excavators and a 2.5 t JCB dumper. Weight categories do not confirm precise width, payload or suitability for a route. Check these for the actual machine and intended use.
Measure the handling route separately
Measure the narrowest and lowest points. Photograph turns, slope changes, steps and manoeuvring space at both ends. Describe known structures below the route and sensitive finished surfaces. Distance alone does not describe handling difficulty.
A short route across a vulnerable surface or house-access area may not be the best choice. Protection and machinery movements must suit conditions. SÚIP emphasises operator competence and familiarity with the machine; this guide does not replace assessment of its use on site.

Material may travel back into the garden
Excavation may be followed by gravel, sand or other agreed deliveries. Plan unloading and movement to the point of use. If a route or surface will be finished in between, check whether machinery still needs to cross it.
Identify materials that must remain separate and their temporary storage. Confirm loading responsibilities and what transport includes. A dumper, excavator and truck are not automatically a single price item.
Coordinate machinery and truck movements
Describe the sequence and areas that must stay clear. Excavator output may not be the main constraint: without storage or room for a truck to leave, the whole sequence needs organising. Confirm it for the site and scope.
The table captures questions for a coordinated quotation. It does not specify trips, payload or achievable savings.

| Stage | Planning question |
|---|---|
| At the excavation | Can material be loaded directly, or must it move? |
| Across the garden | What route is used and what must remain accessible? |
| At the truck | Where can it stand and how will loading work? |
| While waiting | Is temporary storage needed, and where? |
| For return deliveries | Where is material unloaded and how does it reach its destination? |
Example: excavation behind the house, truck outside the gate
The excavation is behind the house while the truck can stand only outside the plot. First assess the complete route, loading space and pedestrian access. If any part is unsuitable, the quotation cannot assume a dumper will work.
Material may also need to travel back behind the house afterwards. Include that stage in the original brief. This example has no promised speed or price. Send the location, dimensions, access and plans for removal and later deliveries.
Frequently asked questions
Can a dumper go everywhere a wheelbarrow can?
No. Suitability depends on actual dimensions, surface, slope and working space.
Is a dumper automatically included with an excavator?
Only if its use is agreed and included in the quotation scope.
Is route length enough?
Include dimensions, turns, slope, surface and photos of both ends. Equal distances can have different conditions.
Is movement to temporary storage the same as final removal?
No. Identify further loading or movement. Each stage needs a defined scope in the agreement.
Describe the full material route
Send a sketch and photos from excavation to loading. Include the location and any return deliveries to the garden.
