Pool excavation: the pit, soil removal and installation

Start with preparation documents for the chosen pool, then book excavation. Connect digging, loading and acceptance by the pool contractor so that each stage has a clear handover.

Three things to know

  • Use preparation documents for the actual pool ordered.
  • Distinguish digging time from readiness for installation.
  • Plan soil removal at the same time as excavation.
Contents of this guide
  1. Pool size is not excavation size
  2. Separate digging time from the complete schedule
  3. Assign a responsible contractor to each step
  4. Plan soil and access alongside dimensions
  5. Identify what may change the plan
  6. Agree excavation handover with the pool contractor before digging

Pool size is not excavation size

The water area is not automatically the excavation size. Use current preparation documents for the ordered pool, including its position and levels. Before digging, agree with the pool contractor what condition the excavation must be in at handover. Book the required handling and soil removal alongside the excavation.

Separate digging time from the complete schedule

Preparation includes setting out location and levels, utility readiness, access, groundworks and acceptance. Subsequent agreed work can then follow. The time for the whole sequence may differ from machine time on site.

If another contractor has a fixed arrival date, mention it in the enquiry. Confirm the excavation condition they require and the contact for changes. An approximate timing estimate cannot guarantee completion without knowing ground and access conditions.

Assign a responsible contractor to each step

List the sequence and a responsible person for each activity. Clarify what must be ready before it starts. Missing coordination can leave an excavator booked without soil-storage space or anyone available to accept the excavation.

The checklist does not imply that SORTI supplies a complete pool. Agree the specific groundworks and transport scope with us, and explicitly assign the remaining work.

Plan soil and access alongside dimensions

Photograph the route from the road to the pool and loading space. Distinguish excavator access from truck positioning. If the truck cannot reach the excavation, assess on-site handling and its effect on work organisation.

Identify soil retained for suitable later use and where it will be stored. Coordinate the rest with transport and receiving conditions. Excavation volume alone does not determine trip numbers; material conditions and the particular vehicle also matter.

Identify what may change the plan

Describe known groundwater, old structures, made ground or other obstacles. Different conditions require agreement with the responsible supplier. Pumping, structural changes or other interventions cannot automatically be assumed to form part of the original quotation.

Weather changes can also require access and work-area reassessment. Agree a contact for rescheduling and recording scope changes. We do not make a blanket one-day completion promise without project-specific information.

Agree excavation handover with the pool contractor before digging

Ask the next contractor for specific handover requirements and information for checking them. Give these to the excavation contractor. Attendance alone is not enough: identify who can confirm readiness against the brief and who resolves a discrepancy.

Distinguish excavation from other preparation tasks the pool may require. Identify the contractor actually booked for each item. This list does not prescribe construction methods or automatically add pool supply to groundworks.

Frequently asked questions

How long does pool excavation take?

A fair estimate needs dimensions, access, ground conditions and a soil plan. Confirm timing for the actual site and scope.

Do you also supply the pool?

This enquiry covers explicitly agreed groundworks and transport. Pool supply and other work are not automatically included.

Are catalogue pool dimensions enough?

Include the full preparation documents for the selected version. These define the excavation and associated requirements.

What if I change the pool after the first quote?

Send current preparation information and identify changes. Reconfirm their effect on excavation, soil and next-stage timing.
