Wastewater holding tank excavation: the product, preparation and handover

The word 'tank' is not enough to define a pit. You need the actual product, purpose, location and placement conditions. Plan excavation with the tank supplier.

Three things to know

  • Order excavation for a specific holding tank model.
  • Provide its position, levels and installation documents.
  • Excavation and tank placement need clearly assigned contractors.

The exact tank type determines the brief

Send the precise tank model and its installation documents. Distinguish a sealed wastewater holding tank from other tank types; everyday terminology does not establish identical requirements. For an earthworks quote, add the position, connections, target levels and known ground conditions. Agree placement and further work separately.

Provide installation documents for the selected variant

For example, ASIO distinguishes structural variants of underground tanks and publishes design and installation documents for them. Your job needs current documents for the exact model, not a generic picture of a similar container.

The design or responsible supplier defines dimensions, base preparation, bedding and subsequent steps for the particular situation. A general guide cannot specify allowance around the tank, depth or support method. If the documents do not address identified site conditions, complete them before proceeding.

Location must suit the design and operation

Add the tank position, future ground level and inlet pipe relationship to the plan using the documents. Identify nearby buildings, known utilities and other buried objects. Siting conditions and necessary consultations belong in preparation of the whole project, not just the excavator booking.

Discuss subsequent operation and maintenance access with the system supplier beforehand too. The location should follow the complete solution. Moving it on excavation day can alter the route, levels and other trades' readiness.

Agree placement and handover arrangements

Clarify who supplies the tank, who handles it and who accepts the prepared pit. Tank delivery requires its own weight, dimension and unloading information. Do not assume the machine booked for digging will automatically place it.

The programme needs to include preparation of subsequent activities and checks before they begin. Excavation, any base, placement, connections and final backfill need named contractors and defined scopes. Ordering excavation alone does not confirm delivery of a complete working holding tank.

Plan soil, access and known complications

Attach photographs of the route from the road, truck standing space and area around the future pit. State whether some soil stays and where it can be stored under the agreed arrangements. Removal is planned against the actual material and its receiving destination.

Mention known water, fill or old structures separately. If work reveals different conditions from the documents, clarify the next steps with the responsible person. This guide promises neither pumping nor a universal tank modification for any ground conditions.

An example and information for the quote

An owner sends only the tank capacity and wants excavation before delivery. However, the product type, installation level and installation contractor's contact are missing. Clarify those details before confirming scope so the pit suits the next stage.

For a quote, therefore send the municipality, product and installation documents, site plan, access photographs and soil plan. Add the placement date and required earthworks activities. This example is not a particular SORTI project or a promise of complete installation.

Frequently asked questions

Is tank capacity enough for a quote?

No. In particular, we need dimension and installation documents for the actual variant, its position, levels and site conditions.

Is this the same as excavation for a rainwater tank?

They are different briefs, although some organisational steps are similar. Use documents for the product and purpose actually chosen.

Does excavation include placement and connection?

Only if expressly agreed. Divide tank supply, handling, connection and earthworks according to the actual order.

What if groundwater is known to occur at the location?

State that during preparation and inform the responsible designer or system supplier. A technical solution cannot be replaced by generic advice to dig deeper or pump water.

Your next step

Have the tank model and installation contractor confirmed?

Send matching product references, drawings and installation documents. Add the site plan, known conditions and exact earthworks scope.
