A pergola with ground preparation: defining the whole job

The pergola, its foundations, terrace and surrounding landscaping are connected stages. Bring them together in one plan, but assign each its own scope and contractor.

Three things to know

  • The chosen pergola needs a matching foundation design.
  • Describe ground, structure and surface separately.
  • Coordinate levels and dates between all contractors.

Coordinate the pergola, foundations and surface

Provide the chosen pergola structure, position and supplier's requirements. Specify ground preparation, designed foundations and the finished surface separately. If these are handled in stages, contractors must pass on positions and levels. 'Turnkey pergola' alone does not explain whether earthworks or terrace finishing are included.

Define ground preparation and foundations separately

State whether surfaces or an old base must be removed, levels adjusted or excavations made to the foundation design. Foundation dimensions and execution must follow the actual structure and documents; they cannot safely be inferred from the pergola's overall footprint.

Agree who prepares and supplies the technical brief and how compatibility with finished areas is checked. The commercial offer needs clear inputs. This guide specifies no universal pads, depths or anchoring details.

Distinguish the pergola, terrace and surrounding finishing

You can enquire about a pergola together with area preparation or a terrace. Materials, execution and scope are confirmed for each job. A combined brief should not mean everything is rolled into one undefined item.

Describe the surface beneath the pergola, its relationship to surrounding areas and what must be complete at handover. Include lighting, other installations or another supplier's products as interfaces requiring separate clarification. They are not automatically part of supplying the structure.

Address access and materials while planning the job

Photographs should show the route from the road to the work area, not only the future pergola footprint. Add narrow-point widths, turns and surfaces to retain. Flag known utilities and buried objects.

If earthworks create material for removal, plan that before new structural components and other materials arrive. Loading, unloading and temporary storage need real space. The stage sequence follows the brief and the site.

Work packageWhat the brief should explicitly contain
Pergola structureDimensions, material, specification and available design
Ground preparationRemoval, alterations and excavations to the documents
Foundations and installationThe technical brief and responsible contractors
Terrace and surroundingsSurface, level relationships and finished condition
Materials and transportWhat leaves, what arrives and where handling takes place

Example: a pergola on a new terrace

An owner requests a pergola by dimensions, only later explaining that a new terrace must be built beneath it after removing an old surface. The original description therefore excluded levels, area preparation, removal and delivery coordination.

A more precise combined brief shows the structure, surface, required earthworks and technical document readiness. The quote can then distinguish the parts. This example is not an actual SORTI reference or a guarantee of a particular material option.

With several contractors, define four handover points

One company may supply the structure and another prepare the site. Break the joint brief down by actual handovers: foundation documents, a site ready for installation, structural delivery and the required final surrounding condition. Assign a contact, document and outstanding questions to each point. Matching calendar dates alone do not confirm that every part is ready.

Also clarify what must remain visible or accessible before the next stage. This is not a universal sequence for concreting, anchoring and surface installation. That must follow the particular design and the responsible contractors' agreement. The checklist simply helps prevent every company expecting somebody else to have prepared an item.

How to obtain comparable quotes

Send the location, dimensions, design, photographs and required result. Explain whether you need only the pergola or also a terrace, old-layer removal and transport. State what someone else is already providing.

Compare whether offers cover the same preparation, structural supply, installation, handling and finishing. If a design is missing or site conditions remain unconfirmed, assumptions and required clarifications should be visible. That makes it possible to agree a defined scope instead of an unclear 'everything around the pergola'.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enquire about a pergola together with site preparation?

Yes. Send the whole project and identify the parts required. Execution and scope are confirmed against the actual brief and documents.

Are foundations automatically included in a pergola quote?

They must be explicitly defined and supported by the technical brief. The project name does not establish their specification or price.

Does the pergola price include a new terrace?

Only if the quote includes a terrace with a defined scope. Distinguish the pergola structure, earthworks and surface beneath it.

Does this guide specify foundation pad dimensions or permission rules?

No. Technical and other necessary documents are addressed for the actual structure, position and project. A general text does not replace them.

Your next step

Enquiring about a pergola and surrounding preparation?

Send the design, photographs and contractor responsibilities. Define the required earthworks, transport, structure and surface finishing.
