Three things to know
- List parts to remove and retain.
- Check the new fence's interfaces before removing the old one.
- Include access, temporary conditions and removal in the brief.
Contents of this guide
Address the old fence and new design separately
Mark existing posts, bases, infill and elements to retain. Address the new route and structure separately; an old foundation is not automatically suitable for a new solution. Distinguish removal, handling, transport, earthworks and new installation in the quote. If work is staged, define the condition between stages.
Confirm the new fence's position and interfaces
The new structure may have different posts and positions from the original. Provide the intended type, length, heights and opening positions. If another gate or adjacent surface is included, obtain its requirements before preparation begins.
The old fence position alone establishes neither the boundary nor permission to alter every part. Resolve required documents, access and associated relationships beforehand. If the structure retains soil or connects to another building, clarify an appropriate solution.
Include temporary conditions in the plan
State whether vehicle access must remain usable and whether parts of the property can be open during work. If temporary separation or closure is needed, list it separately. Its provision, specification and duration require explicit confirmation.
Removal and new installation may not happen within one uninterrupted day. Actual conditions, new-structure preparation and deliveries affect scope. Agree who authorises changes and who receives the site between stages.
Break removal down by actual material
An old fence may combine metal, timber, concrete and other parts. State known composition and origin. If retaining components, mark them before starting and agree storage; do not automatically treat them as material for removal.
Clarify loading, transport and destination acceptance conditions. Moving material from the rear boundary to the truck is not automatically part of the trip. For unfamiliar boards or suspicious material, determine the next steps first rather than assuming routine dismantling from photographs.
Compare the entire replacement by stages
Separate dismantling visible parts, removing agreed foundations and preparation for the new fence in the quote. Then identify new materials, construction and surrounding finishing. A price difference may arise from a different starting or finished site condition.
SORTI offers demolition, removal and fencing within an agreed scope. You can describe the whole project in one enquiry, but every item must actually appear in the quote. Materials and methods are confirmed against the brief.

| Stage | What must be clear |
|---|---|
| Original fence | What is removed, retained and still to be checked |
| Hidden parts | Scope and clarification procedure after exposure |
| Removal | Composition, loading and destination acceptance |
| New fence | Design, material and opening positions |
| Handover | Temporary closure and surrounding-area finishing |
Have surrounding reinstatement described separately
Fence replacement may be followed by ground, lawn or path work. State which tasks you order and who accepts the rest. Removing agreed old-fence parts does not automatically restore every surrounding area.
For illustration, an offer covers removal and a new fence, while the client also expects a finished garden edge. Before ordering, align the final result's limits and the next contractor's requirements. If exposure changes scope, pass the affected items for confirmation. This checklist is neither a demolition method nor a solution for working beside someone else's foundations.
Example fence replacement brief
'I want to replace a fence in [municipality], approximately [length]. The original construction is [description]; I want to retain [parts]. I know [details / unknowns] about the foundations. The new fence should be [type]. I need [removal, transport, new construction, surrounding work], while retaining [requirement] during works.'
Attach views of the full route, individual parts and access. If you have a new fence design or gate supplier, pass on their documents. The separate wire fence guide helps define installation; this one focuses on the transition from old to new.
Frequently asked questions
Does replacement automatically include old foundations?
Only if expressly listed in scope. Unknown parts may need clarification after exposure.
Can I retain a gate or some materials?
Identify them beforehand and agree handover or storage. Further usability is not promised without checking.
Will the property remain enclosed throughout?
State that requirement separately. Feasibility, specification and responsibility for temporary separation need confirmation.
Is this another mesh installation guide?
No. It covers old fencing removal and coordination with new construction. Installing a new wire fence has its own guide.
Describe the old fence, new result and intermediate stage
Send labelled parts, document status and access requirements. We will define removal, transport and new installation separately.
