Sand delivery to site: ordering the right supply

'Sand' is too general for an order. You need a requirement for the actual use, a quantity with its unit and an unloading location.

Three things to know

  • Provide the exact specification, not just 'fine sand'.
  • State the quantity unit and whether it is confirmed.
  • Agree the unloading area and further movement.

Order using the exact specification

Supply the exact reference from the design or next contractor's requirements. Materials for different uses should not be substituted merely because they look similar. State whether quantity is a confirmed order or estimate and attach its basis. Transport is then assessed for the load, access and unloading method.

Pass on the specification without losing detail

When forwarding a requirement, attach the original extract and identify the applicable item. 'The finer one' may mean different things to the seller and next contractor. Have unclear shorthand explained before ordering.

If an available product changes, submit the proposed alternative to whoever specified the requirement. A haulier should not improvise missing technical instructions. Decide substitutions before delivery, not when material is being used on site.

State the unit and source of the quantity

Explain whether you are ordering tonnes, loose material volume or so far only have design area dimensions. Distinguish a confirmed order from an initial estimate. Otherwise, the same number may represent incomparable conditions.

Confirm volume-to-weight conversion for the material and supply method. Do not automatically treat your calculation as an exact trip count. If the next contractor determines the quantity, pass on their documents and identify unresolved figures.

Prepare the unloading area and material separation

Photograph access, vehicle standing space and the receiving area. If several materials are on site, state their planned positions. Decisions must fit the actual site arrangements and agreed unloading method.

Say whether material will be used immediately or stored for another stage. Movement behind the house, spreading and construction processing are ordered according to specific scope. They are not automatically part of delivery alone.

The quote must reflect the same brief

Compare material, confirmed quantity and unit, then transport, loading, unloading and any further movement. Differences may concern another product or service scope, not merely sand price.

SORTI lists sand and other material delivery among its services. The actual material, quantity, transport possibilities and date are confirmed for each job. This guide does not present material sourcing or professional specification of its use as automatically included in every order.

A short enquiry without unclear shorthand

'I need sand delivered to [municipality]. The exact specification from [design / contractor's requirement] is [details]. Quantity [value, unit] is [confirmed / estimated]. Unloading is required at [position]; further movement [is arranged / needs discussion]. Documents and access photographs are attached.'

If you do not yet have a specification, say so. The intention helps initially, but a final order must resolve outstanding information. Have proposed substitutions approved before delivery so subsequent work uses the material actually agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Is ordering 'fine sand' enough?

For an actual delivery, provide the exact specification required by the work. Generic shorthand may mean different products.

Do you recommend one grading for all work?

No. The relevant documents or responsible contractor must specify what suits the actual use.

Can I give quantity only in cubic metres?

Explain what the volume represents and where it comes from. Confirm the delivery unit and any conversion for the actual material.

Does delivery include spreading sand?

Only if that scope is explicitly agreed. Delivery, further transfer and processing are different parts.

Your next step

Send a list of confirmed sand requirements

For each item, give the product, quantity, recipient and unloading position. We will clarify outstanding details before confirming transport.
