Three things to know
- Provide the route, connection points and levels.
- Excavation, pipe installation and backfilling are separate stages.

Separate excavation from pipe installation
Separate earthworks from pipe installation and connection. The quote should identify who removes the surface, excavates, handles soil and, where ordered, backfills and reinstates the area. Provide the route documents, confirmed connection points and the installer’s contact details. A universal depth or gradient from the internet cannot replace that brief.
Water: one depth from the internet is not a specification
Water connection depth follows the design, local conditions and operator requirements. The future ground level also matters: the garden today may not be at the level of the finished driveway. Pipe cover and the depth of the trench bottom are different measurements.
The groundworks contractor needs clearly handed-over levels and requirements for preparing the trench bottom. If these are missing, or site conditions differ, resolve them with the designer and operator before proceeding. Digging deeper without agreement can also change removal volumes and the quantity of backfill material.
Sewer: begin with connection points and levels
For a gravity sewer, the trench length alone is insufficient. You also need the level of the outlet from the building, the verified connection point and the designed pipe route and levels. These establish how the trench must meet the actual connection.
Do not estimate the sewer gradient from the garden or use one universal percentage. Utility crossings, route changes or incompatible levels need to be resolved by the designer with the relevant operator. If the design uses a system other than gravity drainage, these principles cannot simply be transferred unchanged.
Prepare utility information and working space
Arrange information about existing utilities and on-site marking as required for the work. Include private services: power to a gate, garden water, irrigation or an old connection. These may not appear in public utility operators’ records.
Photograph the narrowest access, bends and the entire route to the work. Agree space for soil, materials, loading and continued access to the house. Do not automatically place a stockpile or vehicle beside the trench edge; safe site organisation depends on the actual conditions.
Agree who accepts each stage
Coordinate the installer, operator and groundworks contractor before excavation starts. Establish who provides levels, who checks the prepared trench bottom and who authorises backfilling. Schedule required inspections, tests and any survey before the pipe is covered.
Specify bedding, surround and other backfill materials from the design and the responsible contractor’s requirements. Excavated soil may not suit every backfill layer. Decisions on keeping or removing it belong in the same plan as delivery of new material.

| Stage | What must be clear | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Route handover | Design, level references and marked utilities | Excavation scope and method |
| Prepared trench | Bottom acceptance and installation timing | Pipe installation to the requirements |
| Before covering | Required inspections, tests and survey | Responsible person’s approval to backfill |
| Completion | Materials, backfilling and surface restoration | Agreed handover condition |
Divide the route by surfaces and follow-on work
A connection crossing lawn, paving and other areas has different preparation and reinstatement tasks alongside its shared design. Identify sections on the plan and record what is removed, what must be reinstated and who is booked to do it. One total length does not describe this scope.
Use the same references with the pipe installer and groundworks contractor. If information is incomplete, identify the work it affects. This division does not establish whether a separate section can start or specify connection construction.

| Brief item | What to record | Who clarifies it |
|---|---|---|
| Section | Reference on the current plan and existing surface. | The person supplying the brief. |
| Removal and reinstatement | Required extent and its contractor. | Client and affected contractors. |
| Dependency | Handover and information before continuing. | Installer and responsible participants. |
What to send for a connection excavation quote
Send the municipality, design or available layout, approximate length and photographs of the route and access. Explain whether levels and the connection are confirmed, who installs the pipes and when. Clearly identify information that is still missing.
State which soil should stay, whether material delivery is required and which surfaces should be finished at handover. A groundworks quote can then reflect the actual preparation needed, including how unexpected discoveries and changes will be agreed.
Frequently asked questions
How deep is a water connection trench?
The dimensions must follow the design and operator conditions for your project. Distinguish pipe level, cover and trench bottom: a generic depth does not replace these details.
Can the excavator operator decide the sewer gradient on site?
The contractor needs a defined level design and a verified connection. Missing or impractical details must be resolved with the designer and operator before continuing.
Does an excavation quote include a complete connection?
Only when all tasks are explicitly included. Installation, specialist connection, inspections, groundworks and surface restoration may involve different contractors.
Can the trench be filled immediately after pipe installation?
Only after the project-specific requirements have been met and the responsible person authorises it. Agree inspection, testing and any survey dates in advance.
Send your connection documents
Include the design, site location and route photographs. Explain installation timing, soil removal and the final condition required.
